BEF Lithuania

Baltic Environmental Forum Lithuania (BEF Lithuania)

BEF Lithuania is non-governmental, non-profit organization established in 2003. It is actively involved in promotion of environmental protection by developing co-operation and dialogue between various institutions and stakeholders, and by increasing their capacities in implementation of environmental management.

The main working areas of BEF Lithuania are as follows: to develop, to implement and to participate in projects contributing to responsible management of chemical substances, climate change, nature conservation, water resources management, waste management, education of consumers and developing competence of different stakeholders. BEF Lithuania also participates in the processes of development and decision-making in environmental policy.

Since 2003, energy issues have been of high priority on the programme of the organization. The target group has been local authorities and municipal enterprises. Until now several international events on use of energy sources and energy saving measures have been organized, as well as targeted publications on energy and environment related issues have been published.

BEF Lithuania is the partner of the project and as such takes responsibility for its smooth implementation. It performs as country coordinator for Lithuania and will have the co-lead over WP7.


Elektrėnai, Lithuania

Municipality of Elektrėnai

The municipality of Elektrėnai is one of the newest municipalities in Lithuania, founded in 2000, with 28,400 inhabitants on a total area of 509 km2. Only 5 per cent of it is urbanized. The main town - Elektrėnai, which also gave the municipality its name, was founded in 1961 as a living quarter for the local CHP, which has an installed capacity of 1800 MW of production of electricity. The town itself is supplied by the thermal energy of the power plant. The territory of Elektrėnai Municipality is crossed by the highway A1 and railway Vilnius-Kaunas.

 

In this project the role of the municipality of Elektrėnai is to perform and implement the tasks as a sample municipality for Lithuania in close co-operation with the country co-ordinator BEF Lithuania.
